As an avid golfer, I often wonder what life might be like on tour...
playing each week with the best in the world.
Funny though, when I was in college I used to think about being
a dentist and how great it would be to be a member of a respected
profession, just to be part of the group. Well, after just being
part of the group for more than fifteen years, it was time to either
quit or rise above the group and be a winner. Granted, being part
of a group had its rewards, but when you're around winners your
expectations somehow change. Mine changed when I was introduced
to Bill Dickerson at the Baylor course in the summer of 1996.
After finishing the anterior course, I began to realize that being
with the group wasn't enough, that it was time to do more. I packed
up my amalgamator (put it with my gold foil condenser) and changed
the way I did dentistry. I presented ideal dentistry to my patients,
didn't try to be everyone's dentist anymore, and my practice soared.
I must say at this point that I owe a great deal of my success to
the support and enthusiasm of my staff. They have been behind me
100 percent. They too were not only tired of being just part of
the group, but ready to get started again.
Realizing I had just touched the surface, I took the Advanced Course
in the fall of 1997. Talk about the cream rising to the top... here's
a group of dentists committed to excellence and excelling. If they
had been professional golfers, they would already have a room full
of trophies. The Advanced Course finely tunes clinical skills as
well as marketing skills. But more than that, you begin to realize
that you're different, not that same as you were a couple years
ago, not ready to quit after fifteen years of just being part of
the group, but fired up about dentistry again.
Since being introduced to the LVI philosophy, my practice has grown
in many ways. We increased our production and collection in the
first twelve months by over ten percent. In the last twelve months
we've grown an astonishing twenty-nine percent while reducing our
overhead. My staff is happy. My patients are happy and well cared
for, and my smile gets bigger every day. Now if I could only learn
to putt.
Since completing the Advanced Course, my staff and I went on to
take the Leadership course and the Mastery of Hygiene course. My
hygienists are among the elite in their field, producing in the
top five percent nationally. Their enthusiasm has blossomed and
every week we seek to find new ways to separate ourselves even more
from mediocrity, the professions standard. My clinical staff is
among the best trained and brightest in the their field, and my
administrative staff thrives on our success, fulfilling marketing,
scheduling and production goals.
I recently completed Newton Fahl's Artistry in Direct Bonding Course.
A marriage of finely tuned clinical skills and a master's touch.
The ability to be able to recognize color, light, subtle anatomy,
texture and function, and combine and manipulate materials to achieve
truly amazing results. This course overwhelms the senses, and gives
the graduates the tools and knowledge to offer their patients an
alternative to veneers without compromising aesthetics. A truly
amazing course taught by a very talented master. I can't wait to
see the impact it will have on my practice.
I thank you, Bill, and all the clinical instructors who cared enough
to teach, to share, to encourage and to rekindle. And my patients
thank you for making me a better dentist. I think I know a little
better what it's like to be a winner, to be just a little better
than the group and if only for a moment, to hold the trophy over
my head and be proud that I hung in there.
